Does the Kaimana Mini function without a controler board?

I recently bought one of the larger Kaimana LED controllers and something occurred to me that after over a month of research I still can't figure out. I'm wondering does the board work without having it plugged into another board like the PS360? I'm planning on having all my buttons and stick wired into an Ultimarc I-Pac and I've been wondering if soldering the grounds from each button onto the 20 pins on the Kaimana will accomplish the same thing as plugging it into the top of a PS360 board.
If none of this makes any sense it's totally my fault, I'm basically learning electrical wiring from scratch on this project.
